
The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture , Hon. Emelia Arthur, has held a productive meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Rune Skinnebach, to review Ghana’s progress toward lifting the Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing yellow card issued by the EU.
Ambassador Skinnebach commended Ghana for the recent passage of the reviewed Fisheries Act, describing it as a significant milestone in ensuring sustainability within the country’s fisheries sector. He reiterated the EU’s shared commitment with Ghana to strengthen fisheries governance and secure the removal of the yellow card.
Hon. Emelia Arthur, in her remarks, welcomed the EU’s continued partnership and stressed that while the new law marks an important achievement, its success depends on effective implementation. She underscored the importance of engaging and educating artisanal fishers to ensure compliance with the updated regulations, noting that the revised Act safeguards their interests by ensuring fishing licenses are registered in their names.
The Minister also proposed the use of surveillance footage along the Gulf of Guinea to enhance monitoring and enforcement efforts.
