In the Upper East Region of Ghana, Maaltaaba Peasant Women Farmers Cooperative is rewriting its story, moving from short-term survival to long-term sustainability.
With support from STAR-Ghana Foundation and West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) under the #cssfprogramme, the women focused NGO has embarked on innovative farming ventures that are shaping its future.
Maaltaaba has converted every inch of available land on its office premise into a #PepperFarm, backing up a 5-acre maize farm cultivated earlier this year secured through a local chief in Balungo. The maize farm alone is projected to yield at least 50 bags, generating a projected amount of about 20,000 cedis in income, part of which will directly go into their reserve fund, sustaining Maaltaaba’s work and impact.
But this is just the beginning. Inspired by the #civilsocietystrenghtening agenda, Maaltaaba plans to expand the farm to 20 acres and establish what it calls a #farmhub, a bold social enterprise model that secures livelihoods while sustaining the Cooperative’s mission.
Alongside these ventures, Maaltaaba is #strengthening its internal systems by:
-Recruited three strategic staff
-Developing new policies
-Preparing to launch crowdfunding initiatives
For STAR-Ghana Foundation and our implementing partners, Maaltaaba’s journey shows how community-led initiatives, when supported, can grow into sustainable models for change.
Our gratitude goes to Comic Relief and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, for fueling this transformation.
