C/R: SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES ACADEMY TRAINS FISHING COMMUNITIES ON SUSTAINABLE FISHING

Thirty-five fishermen, canoe owners and fishmongers have been trained under the Small-Scale Fisheries Academy programme to promote responsible fishing practices and environmental stewardship in their communities.

The three-day training workshop, organised by the Small-Scale Fisheries Academy in collaboration with Mundus Maris and the Canoe Owners Association, brought together participants from different regions in Ghana to strengthen knowledge on sustainable fisheries management.

Partnership Manager of Blue Ventures Ghana, Nana Kweigyah, said the trainees are expected to return to their respective communities to educate other fishermen on responsible fishing practices and the need to protect Ghana’s marine resources. He added that the initiative will also contribute to improved sanitation in coastal communities and support efforts to sustain fish stocks for future generations.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director for the Fisheries Commission, Benjamin Campion, has urged the fishermen to practice responsible fishing and avoid using chemicals for fishing.

He said the commission has strengthened enforcement measures to ensure compliance with Fisheries regulations.

Participants expressed appreciation to the organisers for the training and pledged to share the knowledge gained with others in their communities to help eliminate illegal fishing and promote sustainable fisheries.
